The United Nations is far more than a body of diplomats who meet to iron out disputes. The UN’s many programs improve lives on every continent on a daily basis.
Chris Mammen, Managing Partner of Womble Bond Dickinson’s San Francisco office, is one of 200 people from 193 nations chosen to share their story as part of the UN’s “Shared Lives, Shared Future” exhibit. The exhibit marks the UN’s 80th anniversary and highlights the many ways in which the UN supports peace and security, oversees regulatory frameworks, provides humanitarian assistance, fosters development, facilitates international conventions on trade, and advances human rights.
Mammen shared how the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) harmonizes intellectual property laws and standards across countries. Through treaties, guidelines, and dispute resolution services, WIPO helps businesses and creators protect their rights internationally, ensuring smoother trade, innovation and access to global markets under consistent frameworks.
“I represent clients in the global marketplace. WIPO plays a key role ensuring that intellectual property laws around the world are consistent,” Mammen said.
Mammen is one of only two Americans—and just one of five lawyers—profiled in the UN exhibit. Other individuals featured in “Shared Lives, Shared Future” include a student from Poland, a beekeeper from Uzbekistan, a plant manager from Yemen, and a police officer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, among others.
